The freight classification system was created by the National Motor Freight Association (NMFTA) in order to standardize freight pricing for different types of commodities shipped by truck.

The freight class is determined mainly by the density of your freight load, which is measured in pounds per cubic foot, but other characteristics of your freight can be used:

- Stowability: How your freight fits or can be arranged in the carrier truck

- Easy of Handling: How can be handled

- Liability: How perishable, breakable or fragile is your freight
